The Howroyd File

This Page is research into the writer's extended family, and the ancient & rarely encountered Howroyd family name.
The affix "ROYD" is a common part of Yorkshire surnames & placenames. Various authorities say it's origins lie in Old Norse & Old English, to mean a forest clearing, & later it was associated with land classification. "Royd" developed many different prefixes or qualifications, & here it was the Old Norse "How" meaning "at a hillock or tumulus". Thus HOWROYD, could be "the forest dweller on higher ground".
At Barkisland, West Yorkshire, several generations of a Howroyd family are recorded as living there circa 1100. Nearby are Howroyd Hill, Howroyd Lane & the mansion called "The Howroyde". The mansion, a recorded building, was built in 1642 upon some 12th century fragments.
There are HOWROYD families today in England, Australia, South Africa, Canada & the U.S.A.; and to date many have been found to have common ancestral lines. By publishing this, the author hopes to further what is known about the name. Some detail information concerning individuals is not included here, nevertheless any enquiries, corrections, or contributions would be most welcome.
